<잡초드로잉 프로젝트>
‘과연 내가 하고 있는 회화가 말없이 사라지는 것들을 붙잡을 수 있을까’ 또한 '드로잉으로 좀 더 적극적인 소통이 가능 할까’라는 질문으로부터 시작하게 되었다.
2015년 5월 1일 부산에 위치한 예술지구_p에 입주하게 되었다.
한 달 동안 주변을 돌아다니며 이름 모를 잡초들을 캐고, 버려진 테이크아웃 커피컵에 분양토를 섞어 심고, 이틀에 한번 꼴로 물을 주었다.(혹여나 이름이 있을지도 모르지만 여기서 '잡초'라 명명한 것은 나의 무지에서 비롯된 것이리라.)
한 달 뒤, 시중에 파는 식물 10개와 내가 키운 잡초 104개를 재배치하여 관객에겐 알려주지 않은 채 2000원 이상 자유금액으로 팔았다. 그리고 잡초가 팔릴 때마다 최대한 소비자의 시선으로 사진을 찍게 하였고, 그들로부터 이 잡초를 산 이유나 생김새 등을 적게 하였다.
20명에게 27개의 잡초가 팔렸다.그 해 10월, 나는 잡초를 산 사람의 글씨를 먹지를 이용해 똑같이 적었다. 그리고 사진으로 찍어두었던 잡초의 이미지와 그 텍스트를 바탕으로 드로잉을 했다.
'드로잉 스캔 본, 따라 적은 글씨 스캔본과 빈 종이(트레이싱지)'는 잡초를 산 주인에게 보내진다.
잡초 주인은 변모된, 혹은 죽었을지도 모르는 지금의 잡초를 빈 종이 위에 그리고, 이 그림은 전시된 작품 위에 붙여진다.
그리고 나머지, 결국 77개의 죽은 잡초는 금초 드로잉으로 금분, 금색 실 등으로 드로잉 된다.
I started them from these questions: ‘can my painting indeed capture things disappearing without words?’ and ‘can my drawing realize more active communi cation?’
I moved in Art District_p in Busan, Korea, in May 1, 2015, to participate in the residency program.
As I arrived, I collected unknown weeds around there, planted them in abandoned takeout coffee cups with decayed soil, and watered them every other day.
After a month, I placed 104 cups of weeds that I watered and 10 cups of plants that are ordinarily sold in shops together, and sold them to audiences without telling what they are in the open price subjected to pay more than 2,000won.
I took photos whenever weeds are sold in the eyes of buyers as much as I could, and asked buyers to write their reasons of buying weeds or looks of weeds. 27 cups of weeds were sold to 20 people. In October, I made carbon copies of what buyers wrote and drawings based on the photos I took earlier. Then, copies of writing and drawings were scanned and sent to the new owners of weeds along with tracing paper. The owners had to draw weeds that might be transfigured or died in time on tracing paper and these drawings were placed on top of the works in the exhibition. The rest of seventy-seven cups of weeds, died afterwards, was drawn by me with gold powder, gold thread and etc.

한해가 지나고 다시, 77개의 죽은 잡초를 서울로 가져왔다. 2016년 10월 전시 예정인 소마미술관 드로잉센터 주변, 조각 공원 뒤 편에 관리되지 않은 장소, 발 길 닿는 곳에-어떠한 목적을 두지 않고- 그때의 감각에 따라 심기로 한다.
일주일에 5개씩, 2016년 6, 7, 8, 10월에 걸쳐 죽은 잡초를 심은 뒤, 비슷한 듯 다른 텀을 두고 심어둔 잡초를 몸의 기억에 의해 다시 찾아가는 과정을 기록한다.
찾은 죽은 잡초는 하나당 한 시간 관찰 드로잉을 하기로 한다. 어떤 날, 찾지 못한 잡초는 연필로 삭제하듯 드로잉 한다. 모든 과정은 고정되지 않고, 정해지지 않은 길로서 새로운 지도로 기록된다.
After a year, I brought seventy-seven cups of dead weeds to Seoul. I decided to plant them in the abandoned place back of the sculpture garden or just wherever my feet take me without a specific purpose around SOMA Drawing Center where I will have an exhibition in October 2016. My plan was planting five cups of dead weeds every week in June, July, August and October, 2016, and recording my journey to find them again from the memory of my body.
Each found dead weed will be observed and drawn for an hour. Someday, if I cannot find, an unfound weed will be drawn as if it is deleted with a pencil. The record of these processes is not fixed to any format but can be a pioneering journey creating a new map.
